RE Rearranging the family room

So, it's hard to believe but we've not even been in the house a month yet. Well, we signed papers on the 21st of October and took possession on the 23rd but our furniture didn't arrive till the 29th. Since then we have been seriously busy!

We switched out the little toilet in the master bedroom for an adult sized toilet. Terry switched the bath room door around so it would open INTO the bathroom, and replaced the shower curtain rod and shower heads in both bathrooms. Built an island for the kitchen, and additional storage in the garage for kitchen stuff courtesy of the IKEA store. Had the furnace replaced, added a humidifier and new thermostat. Hung some of the pictures, ordered two screen doors for our entries and new keyed locks. Also the installers will fix the problems with two of the doors. We installed the UV film to the south facing windows to cut down on the solar affect. Survived 130 trick or treaters on the third night here and had a shed built which involved moving a bunch of mulch and about 6" deep of top soil in an area about 9 x 15 to bring the spot to grade. And we have rearranged the family room downstairs no less than a gazillion times.

The family room is an odd shape and is complicated by the sauna. While it takes up a chunk of the room it kept presenting a problem till we turned it the other way and created a wall basically out of the side of the sauna. Then it was switch the sofa and two chairs around AGAIN and the tables. Every time we changed it it just felt wrong. Like you sit there and you feel like you are in the wrong house. So we would live with it for a bit, and try something else. Short of tossing everything we kept at it. Actually, Terry is the one moving all the heavy stuff!! By last night and probably 3 variations we settled on an arrangement that seems to feel right. Lets hope it still feels that way when we see it this morning. ; - )

We will be leaving for Sidney MT on Wednesday to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with the grand folks and family in Sidney! This is the first we can take advantage of a trip like this since moving back to America. It's 849 miles up there but the weather looks to be holding out and we should be there and back by Sunday. From the looks of it our biggest challenge will be the West Yellowstone area as they are expecting snow but not much.

I'm sure our next trips will be in the direction of Napa CA for a visit with Reana and Alex, and a trip to OKC to see Kris! All in good time however and we'll take the trips one trip at a time. The trip to Sidney is the shortest of the three. AND I am sure we'll have to find the time to get to AK and see Jared and Mel and Denise as well.!

Till then, we are ON THE ROAD AGAIN! whoo hoo!

Shed completion

So this company here thinks they are a professional company that has been in business for 30 years. The salesman comes out and he and Terry discuss what we want in a shed and how we want the shed customized so we have an overhang for the barbeque. The shed is a lean to style so it can tuck up under the garage overhang and sit as close to the house as possible. Measures about 8 x 12. plus the two foot overhang. They also discussed venting and where it will be placed. Also discussed was the height of the back of the shed and that if the door wasn't going to be 6 feet tall that he would call back and let Terry know. That was on Monday, and the salesman offered Friday for the day for the shed to be installed. Great!

So the builder and the salesman show up to build the shed and lo and behold the salesman gets a 'call' and has to leave, leaving ONE person to build the shed. With out Terry's help, this poor kid couldn't have lifted the walls in place. Let alone manage the joists etc. So then it turns out he wasn't sent with all the material to even do the shed. The builder had to make the hour turn around trip to pick up more material. He worked till it was too dark to work and had to call it a day with a promise to be back first thing in the morning.

So Saturday morning dawns bright and I run my errands early and get home like 10:30 and NO builder. Like what's up with that? So I called the salesman who said he would get ahold of the builder and see whats up and he was to call us back. At 11:30 no call, so I called the owner and had words with him. He's the one thinking he is running a professional shop.

As it turns out the builder had a family emergency and had called the owner at 8 am and let him know he would be able to get out here probably by noon. The owner never called us to let us know this so of course we are upset with the delays. Well, I am upset with the delays. If the owner had called us in the morning and explained the builder had a family emergency and unfortunately won't be able to make it back on Saturday we would have understood and accepted the fact that the shed will have to be done on Monday. Fine. That is acceptable.

Instead he has two (ok well one) ticked off customer who feels he is a total jerk for hanging us out to dry, the builder has to leave the family who needs him to come out here and finish the shed on his own and again without help couldn't have even unloaded the material from the truck. And the shed is about 6" short and the doorway is NOT 6 feet tall. And do you think we got a call about that? NOT.

So, we have a shed now, and in spite of the boss and his practices it's a pretty darn good shed. Still leaves a bad taste in your mouth to deal with such incompetent buffoons. We'll put a couple of shelves in and begin the transfer of garage stuff to the shed! WHOOO HOOOO! as this was the whole point.

And say a prayer for the builder as losing a family member is a hard thing and he was at least a hard working kid who did the best he could under the circumstances.

what a weekend we had

Besides getting some of the photos linked up we did a considerable amount of yard work. This involved Terry digging up the raspberries and between us and the neighbors we did a major trimming to the 9 foot rose hedge. It actually now needs to be gone through and trimmed up and cleaned up, but for now it's so much more manageable then this huge bee infested mess. There are a lot of aphids here and I will have to research my best defense against them.

Then on Sunday we attacked the area where we want to have a shed installed. There was a planted area directly on the back side of the garage that contained badly overgrown lavender bushes and a row of bleeding hearts. This area is bigger than 8 x 12 and is also covered in 2 - 4 inches of mulch with a very heavy duty landscape fabric. So the mulch came off first and we distributed it elsewhere in the planting beds then we peeled off the landscape fabric and started digging. We didn't keep or transplant the lavender as there are at least two other bushes in the yard and we did transplant one of the bleeding hearts to an area we hope is a good shady spot for it.

Terry is removing the dirt to bring this down to grade so when we bring in gravel and then place a shed on it we do not need a huge step up. The plan is to have a lean to type roof line that will tuck under the back side of the garage and slant towards the yard with enough over hang on the one side to tuck the bar b que under so we can cook out of the weather.

My eventual plans for the back yard will be to do a hard scape on an upper terrace that someone built. It's a nice enough area but a royal pain to mow. Can't see how it would possible hurt to take out the sod and edge it and put in rock. There is a nice reddish rock here that I like a lot and would rather look at that then try and mow that area again. Never did that kind of landscaping but it's worth a try!

I did get the job at the eye Dr. office

So, to let you all know, I did get the job at the Eye Surgeons office. It's a small office and there is one surgeon, and one optometrist and a few other employees. Thankfully, I will not be responsible for things like payroll. Man I hate that. The hopes of the owner is that I will be able to be the lead type person by the first of the year. It's a really fun office where they are not afraid to kid around and enjoy the day what ever it brings. The MD is a general Opthamologist so he does most any eye surgeries or would do the work up on like a detached retina and refer it out. My first day was according to them really a busy day and if that didn't scare me off I would be ok. I didn't want to spoil their concern considering a busy hectic day at my previous employer would be to have a full team of 7 or 8 doctors in with full schedules and have one call in sick or not able to get out of the remote hunting site due to weather, and have another called into an emergency surgery cause he was on call the night before. Then you have two complete schedules to reschedule plus all the other patients coming in anyway! Now, that's hectic. Or you could also add an overnight snow storm that causes some of the employees to be late. OH JOY. (I know you all are nodding your heads! LOL)

It's mid November and I have flowers blooming still in my back yard even though it's frosted several times. Terry dug up the wild overgrown clump of raspberries and we'll suffer with volunteers for years out there but between that and the other plant material we cut down we took a load to the dump. The town dump is not a very sophisticated dump and reminds me of the old Yellowstone county dumb in Billings. You just get to back in and drag stuff out of your vehicle into the pile that's already there. In AK you backed up to an area where there were big rigs in the space down below the railing and tossed your stuff into the rigs. The trucks where then pulled out and taken to the actual landfill site behind everything and dumped there. It was very organized. We do have to admit however, the view coming back from the dump is one of the best views across the valley looking to the east!

Last evening we took the scenic drive from Payson to Nephi called the Mt Nebo loop. It was pretty much just a look see drive because all the camp grounds are closed and there is some pretty nasty stretches of snow and ice covered roads along the way. This little road topped out at 9375 feet once we crossed the summit. Can't wait to try this again next year. It comes out on the highway at Nephi which is all of 20 miles south of us. We figured to get up early, dash down to Nephi and grab breakfast at the truck stop and then head over the road. It comes out in Payson real near where we live! sounds like fun!

I am organizing my photos so you can enjoy what we have been enjoying. I've got them sorted to shorter sections so you won't have to look at a gazillion pictures all at once. (can anyone say boring?) I'll get that on the next posting.

Be Aware of Wonder

As we drive around our new home community we are absolutely blown away by what's all here. The Payson valley area is covered in orchards. We drive down section after section and the trees are lined up everywhere! This time of year the colors of the leaves are dark dark reddish brown with some smattering of other colors and as we were exploring on Sunday it dawned on me how this just might look when the blossoms are out. We have lots of different apples, peaches, cherries and I'm not sure what all else out there but it's going to be an amazing spring!

There are several major manufacturing plants here including a world headquarters for a company called Temkin. This company makes various plastic products including the pretty floral wraps your flowers and plants come in from the florist shop. In Springville there is a Stouffers plant, I thing only their third in the country. And there are big buildings elsewhere dotted around. None of it makes you feel you are in the big city atmosphere these places are out amongst the cows. There are lots of cows, horses, sheep, and an occasional lama.

There are also lots of little communities all along the mountains. We were comparing who has high schools and who doesn't and Payson highschool covers quite a few of the little communities so kids are bussed in from all around. It's not very far for them, but they are bussed none the less.

Yesterday we had the brand new furnace installed. The furnace that came with the house had had a problem that was discovered after we moved in. Appeared to have a defective heater core or something. The home warranty we had the sellers purchase would have covered the parts and labor to repair the older furnace but we would have had a pieced together unit that was less than ideal especially since it was only 7 years old. So we opted to use what they were going to pay and apply it to a new unit that is much more efficient. Also we added a humidifier which is something we were going to do anyway. Now we'll be toasty warm this winter and nice and cool next summer. And for the first time since we moved in, my nose doesn't burn this morning. There just might be something to the humidifier thing after all.!

Tomorrow I go in and shadow at an Eye Surgeons office to see how we get along. I'm hoping we get along just dandy and will pull out my medical terminology textbook and my coding books and get more familiar with the terminology and what codes are specific for that territory. It will be interesting.

Making it our own!

We had quite a list to the Home Depot yesterday. Did you know that the words "Home Depot" actually mean WORK YOUR A** OFF in a secret language?

Terry wants to change out the master bathroom toilet to an adult size elongated bowl. That was slated to be done yesterday but the other project he wanted to do took more time than it should have.

The way the builder finished the master bathroom the door opened into the bedroom. Dumb. A door should open into the room you are entering. So, one would think, no real big deal, just change the door around so it swings into the bathroom.

Come to find out, this house is built with about a ton of caulking compound. At least if you gage it by how poorly the bathroom door was hung. So much for buying a newer home hoping it would be built better than our last home. In any case, Terry was able to pry off the trim on both sides without breaking the peices, uninstall the door, pull the tiny wire nails that the door was hung with and by yesterday evening we finished up turning the door around. NOW in case of an earthquake we can stand in that doorway safely! And bonus, it opens up into the bathroom and is no longer in the way of the bedroom. What a simple concept.

The other project was we bought a reconditioned Toro mower at the Home Depot (aka WYAO). We figured our yard hadn't been mowed since August and since we are in a climate that still mows yards in November, ours was fairly bad. Neighbors were offering the use of their mowers, we new it was time. With all the leaves down and the length of the grass we had to have the height pretty high and decided to bag this load this time. I filled three huge lawn and leaf bags. Then we set the wheels lower and I went over it again to bring it down to a more reasonable level and mulched it. All in all, I was mowing for about 4 hours. Let me also say this is really NOT that big of a yard. Now mowing should be pretty reasonable as long as we keep up with it. And the new mower kept up quite nicely, starts easily and is self propelled when you want it. Actually I believe it was dragging me behind it after about 3 hours. What a blessing.

Each little step along the way and we feel more and more at home. ; - )

Trials and tribulations of new home

Well, may be better to say trials and tribulations of new gas range. The two clowns from Sears showed up pretty much on time and that was good. From there it started to get a little rocky.

As I stated in an earlier blog the refrigerator wasn't exactly standard, or was it the spacing in the kitchen but which ever one you want to blame part A the fridge and part B the space it was supposed to fit in were off by 1/2 inch. That was remedied by Terry in jig time and the fridge has been working great ever since, and the cabinets are still up on the wall.

The washer and dryer seem to be working. The washer is my first front loader and I think I am going to like it once I quit worrying if it really is doing anything. It never seems to have enough water in it. It never seems to spin or 'do' anything fast or hard enough, but man, the wash water you can see (when you can see something) looks a lot like Rug Doctor slosh. Like OMG have we NEVER washed our clothes and all we've done is roll around in the mud. Unbelievable. So we think this is a success. Probably my only complaint is the cycle signal is this lovely musical tone that even on high you have to be in the room to hear. Well, our units are in the basement so I'm going to have to work out a timer or a baby monitor or something.

Now, the gas range is a simple model. It's not a convection oven and I suppose I'll live with that. Just the fact that we have gas to cook with again is a joy. Tonight was my first Oven dinner attempt. Just a simple turkey breast no biggee. Oh, I might mention the clowns that delivered our appliances somehow managed to toss the instruction booklet, and any other items that come in the courtesy package when you get a new range. DUH. So while we might expect the first time with the oven on it would smell, we weren't prepared for the apparent fumes that then set off ALL THE DAMN SMOKE ALARMS IN THE HOUSE. SOME BRILLIANT DESIGNER DECIDED THEY NEED TO BE WIRED TOGETHER. Son of a Bitch. So, as we try to decide if we should hunt down the ear plugs (like we are going to find those) we also try and decide how the heck to you shut the darn things off. One of these little beauties is approximately 15 feet in the air on the cathedral ceiling. HOLY CRAP Hope we never have to change that battery.

We opened the windows and turned on what fans we have to disperse the fumes and smell. only to discover ONE OF THE LITTLE BEASTIES is malfunctioning. NO thankfully not the one way up high. Of course we do not own a single 9 volt battery, we couldn't move the batteries so we haven't had a need to buy any till tonight. However, before I could get some, the rotten thing quit beeping. so I went anyway and got batteries. If it starts again and that doesn't work, it's going to have to live out in the garage.

On a brighter note, Terry installed the curved shower curtain rod for the master bath and loves it! We have pretty much most of the house unpacked and sort of settled. All of our pictures are sorted in the living room waiting for decisions on where to hang them. So far three have made their way to a wall. There are a lot more to go.

We awoke to a couple of inches of snow. It's mostly gone already here at the house but it looks like it's here to stay in the mountains. When I tried to leave earlier I was met on the highway with hail. I've driven on bb like hail before and it's not one of my favorite. But winter will eventually be upon us, so we need to unpack the garage so I can pull my car in. Mostly we need to get it to the point where the moving company will come back and take all the nasty boxes and packing paper away.

The furniture we bought has arrived and so now we no longer have to drag kitchen chairs around to sit. ya know, simple pleasures are the best!

Rotten luck

My computer took a direct hit (thank you UPS) and the drives to read the camera do not work, along with my DVD drive. While we try and work out what we'll do we unfortunately will have a delay in downloading pictures. This breaks my heart as I am sure all of you. (yea right) Any way, you can be sure this is a priority as far as I'm concerned.
